It seems obvious to me he means backward thinking or out of date. I don't believe he was being racist. NewsMax is being overtly over offended, they are the ones who point to a hispanic and african american and making this a racist statement.

That said. It is just this kind of rude and unnecessary name calling and rhetoric that the republicans and the public (hopefully) are getting fed up with.
