I posted this on a duplicate thread - didn't see this one earlier. But a couple of weeks ago Vice President Cheney did say it could happen. Here's a quote from his speech:
WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney said the United States still faces enemies that could inflict hundreds of thousands of American deaths in a single day, and he defended the Iraq invasion as a critical strike against such terror. The vice president said, "The ultimate nightmare could bring devastation to our country on a scale we have never experienced. "Instead of losing thousands of lives, we might lose tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands in a single day of war," Cheney said.

Or will people be on here yelling about big brother a month later? Yes.

These folks seem to be fans of Tom Clancy's, as demonstrated by the 9/11 attacks. In "The Sum of all Fears," a smuggled nuclear bomb is detonated at a sporting event. What other scenarios are in Clancy's books?

Ominous. I believe the story of Moslems leaving DC
I read a character 35+ years ago who asserted that the USA Capitol would be moved to roughly the geographic center of our Republic. Hope it's not now from necessity.
Such cultures have extensive "grape-vines."
The grapevines are probably trusted more than the news.
HELLOOOOOO
ANYONE AWAKE? ANYONE PAYING ATTENTION?
Please pray for the safety of our President and our Nation.

So do we take this seriously, or is it just another empty threat. It's not even a threat. It's apparently just a fairly desperate al Qaeda recruitment effort. They have to fluff themselves up like housecats to make themselves appear bigger than they actually are in order to attract young unemployed male malcontents to their cause. I am sure they noticed the huge dip in their recruitment levels.
What testosterone-pumped anti-American boy would be attracted to an organization that didn't at least sound tough? None, of course, particularly when word is getting around that testosterone-pumped anti-American radicals are getting killed and captured in droves, and this is reinforced each time Khalid or Abdul comes back from a trip into Iraq with wet pants and a healthy desire to stay out of any American's and Brit's way. Or didn't come back at all.
Hence, al Qaeda's need to launch attacks where there is media to see. They need extensive hysterical media coverage of their very small 'successes' to appear bigger than they are, all to attract interest from the humiliated extremist Muslim or even the not-so-religious malcontented radical, be they Arab or Asian or even western.
Without the media's witting or unwitting support, and its hysterical descriptions of each terrorist attack, al Qaeda cannot survive. Their recruitment would dwindle to nothing, and most importantly, there wouldn't even be money coming in to support them. Without the relative ease of getting news coverage simply by choosing small targets near press stations and journalists' hangouts, people would notice that the now homeless al Qaeda's capabilities are apparently much smaller than before. Were the media still covering Gitmo and arrests with as much enthusiasm as they cover each coalition casualty, al Qaeda would be hurting just from that. Who wants to join al Qaeda if the only known benefits of the job are going to be ankle bracelets, orange jumpsuits and an extended vacation in sunny Cuba with some unpleasant attendants?
They have been reduced from spectacular economy-shattering hits on glitzy and prestigious targets on American embassies or inside America itself to rather pathetic rocket launches and bomb incidents well away from our shores. If they can make the stock markets jittery by exaggerating their ambitions, then so be it, but so far they sound like they are all fur and no alleycat.
This latest rant just sounds much more desperate- they used to keep their mouth shut until AFTER they had succeeded in an attack.

ChiChick . . . thanks for filling in some of the blanks . . . that makes your comment so much more credible . . . and intriguing . . . and I understand what you're saying, that the person who said it apparently had no agenda and no clue, just shared an observation . . .

...I'm not one to cling to old ways... Which rights to you imagine as counter to security? I find nothing in the first ten ammendments that would prohibit an efficient solution.

Nobody can ever back these fourth or fifth hand rumors up. Why they stay so pervasive is anyone's guess.

if the DC and NYC mosques were empty, someone would notice and the press would be right on it.

Nuke threats that many MIGHT feel were more convincing coupled with President away from DC and condition RED
. . . .
are you saying there would be 0% likelihood of panic?
Nuke freaks a lot of people out whether reasonably or not.

good point. where were all the "we're going to fly planes into buildings" warnings before 9/11.

I recently conducted an interview with an American known as The Booger, who claims to be in the know about our anti-terrorist activities.
He told me about an upcoming operation that will result in the death of thousands of Al Quida operatives.

I emailed the editor of that web site about his report not being available. He promptly replied that referral from Drudge had overloaded his server.
I take these threats very seriously even though many Freepers do not.

If you want to be safe, move to Cuba. If you want to be free, grab some ammo and come with us. You aren't going to change any minds here, this is "Free Republic" after all. Most of us here would rather be dead than enslaved.
