During the 2000 trial, neurologist James Barnhill testified on behalf of Mr. Schiavo about Mrs. Schiavo's condition. Based on his review of her CAT scans, he told the court that most of her brain was destroyed, replaced by scar tissue and spinal fluid, leaving her no hope of recovery. But Florida neurologist William Hammesfahr, in a June 2001 affidavit, stated that his own review of Mrs. Schiavo's CAT scans revealed significant, viable brain tissue. "The CAT scan readings or MRI readings of Ms. Schiavo's brain were misrepresented to the court during the trial in January 2000," Dr. Hammesfahr said.

Brain scans are taken slice-by-slice. A black layer on one "slice" does not indicate what will be found in the next "slice"

Dr. William Maxfield compared Terri's 1996 CAT scan to her 2002 scan and testified that Terri's brain tissue appeared more localized and uniform. "It tells me that the brain tissue on the [2002] study has a more normal appearance," Maxfield testified.

So, it looks like the CAT scans testified to during the 2000 trial were either the same 1996 CAT scans referenced by Dr. Maxfield, or there may have been a second CAT scan in 2000. In either case, according to the testimony in the above paragraph by Dr. Maxfield, there's another CAT scan taken in 2002. It's that CAT scan that Dr. Maxfield indicates has a "more normal appearance".

If the CAT scans Felos was waving around on LKL actually were Terri's, they could have been either from 1996 or from 2000, rather than the more normal appearing ones from 2002.
