In Bernard Lewis' book "What went wrong," he catalouges this very issue. Since slavery is mentioned Koran with Muhammed's approval up till recently the thought of outlawing slavery was akin to sacrilige. It took the might of WESTERN British Empire to cut that nonsense off.

Slavery is a part of Islam, he says in the tape, adding: Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam. I'm sure that they must have skipped this part when trying to convert black convicts in prison ..... something tells me that they may have a problem with this.
Never met a black man that was ever comfortable with the idea of slavery in any form.

Al-Fawzan refuted the mainstream Muslim interpretation that Islam worked to abolish
slavery by introducing equality between the races.
IIRC, the prohibition on slavery wasn't enacted in Saudi Arabia until...
1962.
I still think it horrid that American Southerners who went to church each Sunday
had to be convinced by war to give up the practice of slavery...
but many Muslims are still enamored of the concept at this late date.

Black muslims have been able to ignore the fact that slave traders were muslims so far. No doubt convinced themselves that is a white lie or, er, should I say, a lie perpetrated by whites.

Calling Rev. AL, calling Rev. Je$$e...please report to the nearest airport for departure to muslim mid-east. You are needed to reeducate the peaceful relgion. Reparations should be pursued if possible. That is all.

let me rephrase then - the Brits forced most of the Middle East to cease slave trading and owning from Africa, Europe and Christians of the Middle East. Slave owning of those from the east was winked at.

had to be convinced by war to give up the practice of slavery... They didn't. Abolitionist movements led by Christians in the North and South would have had slavery eradicated in the United States within another 20-30 years. The Civil War was about states rights, not slavery.
