ERAU continues celebration of 100 years of flightStaff report
Last update: 09 November 2003
DAYTONA BEACH -- "Wings & Waves: Embry-Riddle Celebrates the Centennial of Flight," a free air and sea show, will be repeated today along the shoreline, with a worship service and a Veterans Day ceremony tacked on to the beginning for good measure.
The show, presented by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, commemorates the 100th anniversary of flight. Orville Wright made the world's first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine on the beach at Kitty Hawk, N.C., on Dec. 17, 1903. The 120-foot flight lasted 12 seconds. Orville and his brother Wilbur took two flights each that morning before the Wright Flyer was badly damaged by a sudden gust of wind.
"Wings & Waves" again will be centered around the traffic-free beach zone behind the Adam's Mark Resort, 100 N. Atlantic Ave. Parking will be available at the Ocean Center and the adjacent parking garage. Spectators also can park on the beach in the regular beach driving zones. A $5 park-and-ride shuttle service will be offered from the Riverfront Park area in the 200 block of North Beach Street.
Air show organizers suggest visitors take coolers, binoculars, beach towels and chairs.
