I've always ranked Gilmour up there with my top 5 guitarists. He had quite a few spectacular shows in the early 90's.

Maaan...I just posted a few weeks ago about England handing these things out like gumballs for a penny mickey..I said the Queen might as well stand in the back of a pickup truck and wing these medals out into the crowds, and here she is doing it again! Hey, I`m just waiting when Keith Richards gets knighted

Werent there a few scenes from "The Wall" that got the movie banned in England when it first came out?

From what I've read, DG is a really decent guy, and has done a lot of charity work, mostly behind the scenes.
As for his music, he's one of the few guitarists who you can almost always identify. He's not particularly showy or flashy in his playing, and unlike many of today's guitarists, he can get more emotion and feeling with what he doesn't play than what they do!
He's got an amazing sense of time and great style on the guitar. BTW, for a real treat, you might want to check him out on his (mostly) acoustic solo performance DVD, "David Gilmour in Concert." It's really something else.

While I agree that medals are given out too freely by the Queen these days, this is NOT one of those cases! David Gilmour is in a class by himself, both as a guitarist, and as a musician/vocalist in general(also as a man). His solo at the end of Comfortably Numb is awesome beyond words. He just buries those thousand-note-a-second boys with his playing. He's peerless!

Queen Elizabeth listens to unlistenable, pretentious 1970s art rock? Hmmm...
