I perfectly understand Zell's reasons for not leaving the Democrat party. It's a Southern thing. Last year when people on FR were wondering why Zell didn't switch, and predicting he actually would switch, I said no, he'll never switch. Alot of conservative Southerners switched from the Democrat to the Republican party, and that's fine. But alot never did, and never will, and I can understand it both ways.

As far as I can tell (not being in the south) Southern voters like the republicans because the republicans do not play the race card. Racism is a leftist characteristic

Born in Atlanta Ga. in 1952.

I left the Democratic Party after watching the "High Tech Lynching" of Clarence Thomas.

Facsinating!
Democrats still dont have a clue! They think if they lie in a slow and drawling voice, southerners will think they are telling the truth, and forget all about that "yankee carpetbagger" thing.
ROTFLMAO!
Democrats=cowards and communists in 2003.
Southerners have never approved of either.
Ever.
And we are about totally convinced that Democrats have been thoroughly infested by both evils.
The only southerners that still vote for Democrats are recent Yankee migrants, and family friends of local Democrats who wont believe their "neighbor" has gone bad, untill he is executed for treason.
IMHO.

In the South, the reasoning might have been "Democrats = Us; Republicans = Damn Yankees & Industrialists who are destroying our economy!" Which may have been true 100 years ago, but my-oh-my has the world ever changed...

The world may have changed but it hasn't changed that much. That's the point I see the most of. Here in the South, in some cases we are only 3 or 4 generations at most removed from the War (myself three generations on one side of the family, four on the other). And for those that stay in the Democratic Party for that reason, I will never question, I will never insult that reasoning. I respect that view and in most cases agree with that view, much more than the view of voting for liberals just because they have an R by their name

Just to be certain I'm clear. I never meant to imply that you (or anyone) must vote for a republican. Some of the R's are just as bad as the d's. In cases of two liberals I usually write in. Of course this depends on just how liberal the R is. With age and some pressure from his constituents we can usually drive an r to the right. Of course I've been blessed with never having to make that choice yet. But with Lugar drifting leftward that day may be coming.

(Ever notice that Republicans are always stated as being right (correct) and democrats are always stated as being left (behind in the dust))

We've been arguing for years now that a big part of the problem Democrats have in the South and in other regions and sub-regions with "red state" characteristics is the difficulty they so often have in talking about cultural issues, ranging from guns and abortion, to religion and the struggles of families to raise kids, to the responsibilities of individuals and civil society, not just government.

NO, absolutely not. The problem isn't talking about the issues. The problem is what they say and what they believe.

The recent conference in Atlanta we cosponsored with Americans for Gun Safety concentrated on that problem, and offered a variety of ways that Democrats can reach out to gun owners, people of faith, parents, and white males, without in any way compromising their progressive principles.

Democrats idea of "reaching out to gun owners" is to only confiscate those guns over a certain limit, only require registration of the rest (for later confiscation), only require exhorbitant annual taxes on guns, only tax ammunition at 500% of its value, only remove whole classes of firearms from legal civilian ownership (But not, of course, from police ownership), only make restrict firearms ownership for as many citizens as possible, only limit firearms purchases to one a month or better still one a lifetime, and only totally disarm the non government population. This is the democrats idea of "reaching out to gun owners"

These people are not moved by reason. They are not swayed by facts. They have no pity for those who would defend their lives and property from criminals. Democrats and other anti-gunners will relentlessly continue to destroy our rights until they are dead, we are dead or we are totally disarmed.

"Democrats can still find some bright spots -- in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma"

In the large urban areas where the voter base has increased from the influx of northern and western blue zoners moving south.

No doubt the GOP is still willing to play the race card whenever it can get away with it.

And the democrats don't?

>>Why can't they just run on their real values? ( um ... rhetorical question)

To answer that for the rhetorically challenged - Because they don't have any, or, more accurately, have those such that if they were revealed plainly, it would result in even bigger election losses.

Heck, I watched Cynthia McKinney play the race card against a black woman liberal Democrat in the primary.

In all honesty, I believe the "I'm a ____ bcuz my father was a ____ and his father was a ____" is just about the stupidest, laziest reason for identifying oneself as anything!

My father was a democrat. He passed away in the early 70s and I am just about certain were he alive today, he wouldn't have anything to do with that party.

As so many have said before. The party has changed so much as to have no resemblance to the democratic party of the past

I think the first radical change they made(for me anyway) was Roe V. Wade.and how they got on the wrong side of that issue.

Speaking of the witch of Cornel, did you see last night's post about the black male student beating on the white girl at a concert because her "white hair" got in her face?

Can't wait to see if Cynthia demands sensitivity training for him!--Won't hold my breath waiting though

Yes, I did see that, and the same thought crossed my mind.

I don't expect to hear more of it, from any source officially associated with Cornell. I expect them to attempt to sweep in under the rug, post-haste.

Hopefully, a number of Liberal kiddees at Cornell, aware of this incident, have now been "mugged" (mentally if not physically), and will begin the road to conservative thought.

Americans for Gun Safety

Andrew McKelvey's gun grabbing org that doesn't give a rat's ass about safety. Funded by the Tides Foundation which is funded by George Soros and many other leftists.

Translation from the "New Dems"(Which is 100 times worse than the old dems). "Lie to them and fool them".

"I'm a democrat because my father was a democrat and his father was a democrat" types

That's common here too. The yoopers(although they are changing), Detroits Southern Surbubs(not changing), and parts of Macomb and Monroe County(changing) are like that.

Mine likewise, and he's continued to vote the straight Democratic party ticket in every election since his demise.
