Coverdell was a good senator. He was the first (R) senator from GA to get re-elected since Reconstruction. Barnes, who is a loyal (D), really regrets apointting Zell because he is basically a (R). I have been dealing with Miller as long as I can remember. He was LT Gov here in the 80's.

between appointing Roy, and losing to Perdue, Barnes is probably finished in GA!

Actually the first GOP Senator elected from the Peach State in the 20th Century was Mack Mattingly in 1980. He lost in his re-election bid to RAT Wyche Fowler in 1986. Then in 1992, Pubbie Paul Coverdell defeated Fowler. Coverdell died of a heart attack in 2000. Zell Miller beat Mack Mattingly in a special election that year. The Senate seat currently held by Zell tends to swing back and forth between the parties. Next year will be no different.
