Another X-3 flare was just recorded. Looks like a busy week for the space weather folks (again).

Ping

Sunspot 486 does it again. Standing by with fingers and toes crossed for this one.

I agree with that. Last week Wednesday was clear all day- hoped to have a good view of the northern lights- then clouded over just as the sun was setting. Damn Michigan weather. Now they're predicting rain all week. Probably won't see them again this time either.

Last night Art Bell claimed that the strong sun flare decreases the earth's magnetic field, weakens it momentarily and substantially. Is he hallucinating?

3rd X-Class flare in 36 hours happened overnight. This is not even solar max.

I am wondering how to take photos of the aurora... I have a Sony-F707 that I can take photos with. I know it can be done, I just don't know what settings to use.

BTW Spaceweather.com said this could be the largest recorded. They will be updating. Here's the list so far but I think this one may be in a class all its own. They're running out of the alphabet... http://spaceweather.com/solarflares/topflares.html
