At a Ralphs in La Jolla (affected only by smoke from the San Diego fires) yesterday, the strikers were issued N95 masks, which filter 95% of 1 micron particles and are much better than the one-strap dust masks such as those in the picture you posted of Vons strikers.
Those strikers aren't getting any press, and they're only harming themselves with exposure to the smoky air if they're downwind. The wind direction is different today. Here are pictures of the smoke from the last two days:
