Steven J. Smith joined the company in 1976 as a salesperson at WTMJ Radio. He was named general manager of WKTI-FM in 1980. Three years later, he was named vice president and general manager of WTMJ Radio and WKTI-FM. In 1985, Smith was appointed vice president and general manager of KTNV-TV, the company's ABC-TV affiliate in Las Vegas. In 1986 he was named president of WTMJ, Inc. In 1992, Smith became president of Journal Communications. He became Chairman of the Board and CEO of Journal Communications in 1998. He is also chairman of the Journal Broadcast Group, Inc., and Journal Communications' six other companies.

Douglas G. Kiel joined the company in 1986 as vice president and general manager of WKTI-FM. In January 1990, he was named executive vice president of radio for WTMJ, Inc. Kiel was named president of WTMJ, Inc., in 1992. WTMJ, Inc., became the Journal Broadcast Group during his tenure as president. From 1992 to 1995, he also served as general manager of WTMJ-TV. In 1998, Kiel was named president of Journal Communications. He is vice chairman of the Journal Broadcast Group, Inc., and in December 2001 he assumed the additional responsibilities of serving as CEO of the Journal Broadcast Group, Inc.
