The irony is that the bro in law has been complaining about the high cost of cutting down those trees and the fierce-ness of the authorities that it be done! Lots of folks up there are retired seniors and it's been a heavy expense but the trees MUST be cut down.....no excuses!!!

There's more to the story, as Paul Harvey says:

The enviros have passed enough rules that you cannot cut down any trees on your property unless you hire a certified arborist, which can cost a minimum of $5000, and then the Forest Service and usually someone from the county has to give your actions their blessing. Before you even fire up your own chain saw, it can cost you alot of money, and even if you are willing to go thru all of this, there is absolutely NO GUARANTEE that you will get permission in the end. It can be just a rabbit hole that swallows money.
One of the latest hurdles you have to jump is that you cannot tamper with someone's "VIEW SHED". That is ANY tree, shrub, boulder, etc, that ANYONE can see from wherever they live. So, in effect, the guy who holds the property at the top of the hill/mountain/ridge controls everything he can see for as far as he can see. If you want to do something, you have to satisfy him.
If my dad were still alive, he would say" The inmates are in charge of the asylym". He would be right.

Back in Connecticut, a tree fell across my driveway (long dirt driveway), and I called a company to cut it up. They charged $500 for maybe 30 minutes of work, and then TOOK THE WOOD instead of leaving it for me to chop for my fireplace.

I was incensed. God knows how much it would cost if I wanted to fell some of the iffy-looking trees along the driveway. I bought a chainsaw after that, but sold the house before I got around to using it.
