Thanks C4E, I'm reading as fast as I can. God love their hearts, but this is good news. Whew. Oh, good morning. :)

This would explain the comms last night 12am-1am where most of us thought Blue Jay was going to get toasted.
Fire Crosses Highway 18 Warning: The following information is highly speculative and based upon unconfirmed sources and sparce information. Do not assume any losses based upon this information. Between 10 PM and 11 PM on Monday, the Old Fire broke through the fire lines near Rimforest. Some reports place the fire near Pine St. The fire is mostly crowning (remaining in the treetops), but there are some structures involved or threatened. The communication tower at Strawberry Peak has been lost hampering communications and our ability to listen. Firefighters are retreating from the area. The fire is burning towards Rimforest, Twin Peaks, and Blue Jay. Below is a rendering of where the fire may be based upon the sparce information available. This may be inaccurate. Do not rely on this for any idea of structure loss. Even if the fire is in this area, the fire has tended to spot and leap over area. Do not assume all areas in red have burned. Blue areas are areas on known gelling operations. It is likely that more gelling is occurring than shown.

Fire chief just announced on KOGO that Lake Henshaw and Pauma Valley are being threatened. The fire is not advancing fast and being burned slowly.

Q:
"I'm curious. How come these "accidental" fires never occur down in Baja Mexico?" A:"My guess is that there are fires, but as the forests may be picked over for wood to be used as fuel in homes, etc., there is not enough of that dead undergrowth that really helps fires along?"
That's not a guess, that's a fact.

HWY 38 from Big Bear IMHO is one of the easiest routes to come down off the mountain or to go up. You don't have the steep drops except in a few locations like you do going down HWY 18 or 330. At least I didn't grip my steering wheel coming down or going up HWY 38 if that is any indication. HWY 38 comes down the mountain and on into Redlands once it hits the canyon floor. Pretty good road, but it goes through a lot of forest area with big trees and from what I remember from when I was out there recently a lot of dead wood. The biggest pine cones I have ever seen come off those trees. That route could be cut off easily if fire moves around the rim too far. Absolutely beautiful drive through the San Bernardino forest.
Don't know much at the route that goes down into the High Desert from Big Bear.

Oh wow, thank you all so much. I'm trying to pick up the live feed I had yesterday, but no luck so far. I've got a scanner feed, but don't understand most of what I am hearing.

Uh... belay the comment about the evacuation of Julian. Sheriff's think somebody ordered it, but Forest Service doesn't agree. So, Pine Hills evacuated, Cuyamaca threatened, Julian uncertain. The old "left hand / right hand" issues that affect this kind of incident.

"KTLA reporting hard to use choppers in the thin air of the mountains at Arrowhead -- reduces load and harder to maneuver."very heavy cargo (water & retardant).
