I've seen the lettuce and grape argument many times. It don't fly no more......

The "we need farmworkers" argument is kind of silly because we're bringing in over a million illegals each year and farmland is shrinking, not being added. Even if we need some illegals to work the farms --- that wouldn't explain why 20 million illegals are now in the USA. There were not 20 million jobs in farmwork added in the past 20 years.

Wal Mart has a responsibility to know who their sub-contractors hire.

Certain corporations have been doing more and more "contracting out" jobs because that allows them to avoid wage and labor laws. For example --- if Walmart hires a janitor, that janitor will be covered under overtime laws, FMLA laws and all the rest. Bring in contracted janitors --- Walmart has the same employee but doesn't need to follow the labor laws. Not that I believe in FMLA and many of those laws ---- I don't but it makes it very difficult for the more ethical law-abiding competition to stay in business. How many ethical stores did Walmart shut out of business?

While its been a while since I've worked in an agriculture related field, I've yet to see techology that would allow the

For one --- we don't need a million new illegals every year to pick grapes --- the size of the fields isn't growing --- in fact farmland is shrinking at a drastic rate. The other ---- cheap labor isn't what makes our farms competitive ---- Mexican farms ---- with even much cheaper labor cannot compete and are going bankrupt en masse because of NAFTA. In Mexico, they might have to pay a farmworker $4 a day --- here it's going to be 8 times that. So if cheap labor were really a factor --- then we'd be losing out to the Mexican farms.

The reason American farms are putting Mexican farms out of business is ours are mechanized, theirs aren't. Plus government subsidies of course.

A few years ago --- back when half the illegals were here as now --- I would see lettuce selling for $0.50 a head ---- which is not cheap considering what lettuce is. Now --- with the illegals doubled in number it's going for a ridiculous over $1.00 per head!!! What good are all these illegals doing? Milk is over $3 a gallon? Apples over $1 a pound? I don't see where you are finding the cheap prices they're bringing.

That's why I think this raid is something in the right direction. These people sound like they were the kinds involved in stolen social security numbers and fraudulent documents. That would make them felony criminals. Ending all welfare to immigrants would be a very important step to make. I'm all for ranking the illegals ---- the welfare takers and document fraud illegals are the most undesireable ---- and we should focus on getting them out. An illegal raking leaves or picking some grapes for cash who doesn't have his kids here isn't the same type of problem obviously.

Also if there is a need for farm workers --- then give them the H1B visas that we don't need to give to programmers.

The CONTRACTOR word just isn't sinking in with a lot of posters is it!!!

Because everyone knows that contracted workers are often a gimmick by upper management. They're often just there to replace the regular workers --- do the same work, under pretty much the same conditions, have the same bosses in reality --- just not on paper.

D*mn these people wanting to work! No punishment is too harsh. (I do not hold the majority view here about undocumented workers. I'm sorry, I just can't.)

I don't blame them for wanting to work ---- I'm sure they do ---- but how many hundreds of millions of people are there in the world who are in the same boat? I'm sure 98% of Haitians, 90% of Latin America, 100% of China, 95% of India, and so on would be here in a flash. We can't take them all in and keep any kind of standard of living ---- it's time there become some other decent places to live in the world --- we can't be the only one.

It's been common knowledge that Wal-mart has employed illegal aliens for years...

It is also common knowledge that you support the striking unions.
