"You'd expect these kinds of court cases to be stopping," said Dr. Arthur Caplan, chairman of the Department of Medical Ethics at the University of Pennsylvania, "but we're still not sure what to do when a patient isn't terminally ill, when there is a family dispute, when the person's young and somewhat conscious."

Spoken like a true champion of death. Whatever happened to "first do no harm?"

"Nurses give her painkillers during menstruation because they seem to stop her moaning, even though doctors do not think she is capable of feeling pain. It is mostly for the benefit of the nurses who are distressed by Terri's moaning."

Lovely. Oh yeah, and it is probably just coincidence that she moans when she has her period since she can't feel pain. < /sarcasm >

"In granting a spouse the power of acting as surrogate for critical medical decisions, a court presumes the relationship is loving and caring. Michael Schiavo has professed to such feelings in court.

Yeah. He loved his wife so much that he got a live in mistress and had a couple of kids with her. Actions speak louder than words Michael. Perhaps someone should tell this to the court.

For patients already close to death, dehydration and starvation can be a relatively pleasant way to die, doctors say."

In the first place, Terri, to my knowledge, was never close to death, past her initial collapse anyway. Second.......HUH?????

"I have no empathy towards them [the Schindlers] anymore," said Michael Schiavo, "not after what they put me through

Guess that shows who he's really concerned about.

Some remarkable quotes, huh?

And so many people still have their heads in the sand...

When a Dr. gives an order for pain medicine (can't give it without one) there has to be a related diagnosis. I have been a nurse since 1982 and I have seen a lot of orders but I have never seen one for medication "to stop resident moaning for the " nurses benefit" Even comotose residents just don't moan to be moaning. Something usually going on.
