I don't have any advice for you in your struggle.
I am stopping cold.
The last time I quit, I stopped cold and stayed smoke free for 18 months (until I went out drinking one night with some friends who smoked... "one cig won't hurt" is such a mistaken notion). That was nine years ago, thereabouts.
Nicotine as an addictive agent is comprable to heroin.
That's a big baass monkey to shrug off.
Some people stop cold, and it works.
Some people use patches or gum, and it works.
Some people try everything under the sun, and nothing works.
I don't know why this is.
For me, this time, it is a matter of honoring my word to a gravely ill, perhaps moribund, friend. My word to nicotine addiction is as King Kong is to a spider monkey.
For me, this suffices.
Good luck in your eforts to quit.
