I would not recommend a 30-30 for any purpose. Unless you like rainbows, because that is all a 30-30 is good for.

I agree. My Winchester Model 94 is pretty to look at, but it is by far the most inaccurate weapon I've ever fired. The ammo sucks too. I been threatning to reload it, but what's the use. I heard a rumor that the Marlin was a little better...but not much.

The 30/30 is perfectly suited to hunting whitetail size game out to 150 yards. Sighted in at 100 yards, the 170gr. bullet will drop less than 3.5" at 150. Sight the gun in 1" high at 100 yards and you can aim dead on at any range from point blank to 150 yards without worry about drop. Remaining KE at the 150 yard mark are still at approx. 1000 ft.-lb. Plenty for taking whitetail sized game.

My 30-30 marlin 336 will group within an inch at 100 yards all day long. My brother-in-law in his years of hunting has taken numerous Mule deer, Elk, Black Bear, Couger, and Coyotes all with the winchester 94 in 30-30, this was in the wide open spaces of Utah. The 30-30 round has probably taken more deer in the U.S. than any other cartridge out there. If you couldn't hit with it there are only two things that could have been wrong and I'm giving the benefit of the doubt when I say it was probably a bad rifle. Bad rifles come in all calibers!
