Blasts rock coalition headquarters
BAGHDAD:
Two explosions rocked central Baghdad late last night near the headquarters of the US-led Coalitional Provisional Authority (CPA), said CPA spokesman Charles Heatly.
The CPA headquarters is located in toppled president Saddam Hussein's former Republican Palace.
Witnesses on the other side of the Tigris river said they heard two large booms in the palace area and saw tanks on the move.
Earlier, unidentified gunmen assassinated the director of a hospital in the southern city of Basra. Colleagues said Haider Al Baaj, chief doctor at Basra's teaching hospital, was shot dead with a single bullet to the head as he was leaving his private clinic at sunset.
The assailant and his accomplice fled.
Elsewhere, one person was injured when Iraqi police fired shots to disperse demonstrators marking the anniversary of a pro-Saddam referendum and protesting a new currency that no longer features the toppled dictator's face.
Underlining US support for the new dinar, US Commerce Secretary Donald Evans attended a ceremony to mark the launch of the bills.
A speeding car fired shots in front of the Baghdad Hotel the site of a car bomb attack three days ago that killed eight people including the bomber, according to witnesses.
Security guards and US soldiers fired back at the car.
Meanwhile, the US Congress opened debate on an $87 billion (BD33bn) appropriation fund for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Iraq's transitional Governing Council, Ayad Allawi, said elections will "definitely" be held next year in the war-torn country, speaking at a summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, in Malaysia.
Syria last night denied assailants had infiltrated Iraq from Syria, following a US military report that several people were killed after having crossed the border and fired at an American helicopter.

She's on her way to doing that right now. No. Korean nukes have been a huge wakeup call for her.

We will have to keep killing them.
They are comming to us and that is better than looking for them.
As for the Taliban, I figure they will be changing their name soon.
The Madrassas are being gradually closed. Even Saudi Arabia is preparing local elections! Totaly wierd for those folks.
We must change the roots of this evil. It is going to be a long struggle with these people, but in the end it will be worth it.
The other option is to end up like Israel and have them surrounding you and picking you off a couple at a time for generations.
Not a pleasant thought.

This thread is about Iraq, not Afghanistan
---------------
My mistake, but the process is the same in both countries by the same mentalities. Whether you call them Taliban or mongolian jug zonkers, shake them up in a bag and pour them out, there's not a dime's worth of difference between them.

The first step in changing the roots is to get rid of a nitwitted American president who calls Islam the religion of peace. Until that happens, we are doing nothing.

The possibility that No. Korea has the capability of launching nuke-tipped ICBM's (against targets in the U.S.) and MRBM's (against Japan) complicates the situation tremendously, obviously. If we make a mistake and Kim Jong is crazy enough to launch them (and they hit their targets), say goodbye to the U.S. economy (and to perhaps a million or more Americans). It's a very tough spot --- I have no idea how to proceed.

If Japan became a military power again, that would change everything in Asia. The US might encourage it, in order to reign in China. There always has to be a balance.

There always has to be a balance. Clinton's justification for selling nuclear secrets to China.

$87 billion...And half of it had been be going to erasing these vermin from the face of the Earth.
I hope President Bush realizes the American people won't tolerate the same kind of life Israel has endured for centuries.
Americans don't want another draw like Viet Nam and they sure don't want their sons falling three a day without some positive results SOON.
Wipe them out now.

Two out of five. Not bad. But he'd better hurry up.
Twelve months to go.

BS. Blown out of proportion.
The CPA Palace was not "rocked" by anything.
Six RPGs were fired at a unit's position. Two more impacted at a traffic circle near my quarters.
