Removal of brain-damaged woman's feeding tube to proceed MITCH STACY Associated Press
DOVER, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday he has ordered his legal team to try to find a way to intervene in the case of severely disabled woman who is scheduled to have the feeding tube keeping her alive removed.
Bush's comments came after a 20-minute meeting with the family of Terri Schiavo, who faces a 2 p.m. Wednesday deadline in the removal of the tube. Her husband, Michael Schiavo, has been granted permission to remove the tube in a six-year legal battle against her parents, Bob and Mary Schindler.
Bush said his attorneys are looking for legal alternatives to somehow block the removal of the tube, but did not know yet what they might be.
"We are going to seek whatever legal alternatives are available and seek the best minds to find another avenue to submit to the courts to see if there can be a change in this ruling," Bush said at an appearance in Dover dedicating new housing for migrant workers.
"I am not a doctor, I am not a lawyer, But I know that if a person can be able to sustain life without life support, that should be tried," the governor said, adding the "ultimate decision of this is in the courts."
Bob Schindler Jr., Terri Schiavo's brother, said the family was heartened by the governor's last-minute effort. The Schindlers have pleaded with Bush - who in previous legal findings have supported their efforts to obtain therapy for their daughter - to intervene.
"The family has not given up hope on Terri," Bob Schindler Jr. said following the meeting with Bush. "We have spoken to the governor, and he hasn't given up hope either."
Terri Schiavo, 39, is expected to die within two weeks after the tube's removal. She's been in a vegetative state since suffering a heart attack in 1990. Her parents believe she is capable of learning how to eat and drink on her own.
A state appeals court in Lakeland rejected motions by an attorney for the Schindlers and their legal remedies have been exhausted, their lawyer said Tuesday.
Michael Schiavo says he is carrying out his wife's wishes that she not be kept alive artificially. The parents say their daughter has shown signs of trying to communicate and could be rehabilitated.
"In our eyes, it's murder," Bob Schindler said Wednesday on CBS' "Early Show."
George Felos, attorney for Michael Schiavo, said that the Schindlers were "still in denial" over Terri Schiavo's wishes not to be kept alive.
Doctors have testified that the noises and facial expressions Terri Schiavo makes are reflexes and do not indicate that she has enough mental capabilities to communicate with others.

He wants that money, doesn't he?

I don't think last minute conversations can trump community property laws in a state. It's not quite the same matter as having a feeding tube removed to starve and dehydrate the victim.

I called the office a few minutes ago (1pm) and the girl said that Jeb has his entire staff struggling to find a way around this and that he was EXTREMELY For starters maybe he could demand that the police that have been posted by her door to keep her parents from moving her to Canada where she'll be safe (I can't believe I'm saying this) be sent home!

Michael can prove his motives by giving everything she leaves him to her family. He wouldn't do it, IMO.

I truly believe that if there is a way Jeb will find it!

In her case, maybe. In my dads case, we spoke months before he passed unexpectedly, and I had made his wishes known to family members while he was alive. Step-family stepped in and took over. Sad story, it was a bitter pill to swallow at the time, but I eventually forgave them if for nothing more than my own freedom.

Doctors have testified that the noises and facial expressions Terri Schiavo makes are reflexes and do not indicate that she has enough mental capabilities to communicate with others. No bias here, eh? Some doctors (those cxhosen by the euthanasia attorney, Felos) have characterized her facial movements and following of directions a 'not enough mental capacity to respond'. I'm just about fed up with this evil bias of the scoailist societal engineering media whores! Professionals? Yeah, professional liars and deceivers ... and they're trained that way!

This is intersting. If she dies, they will now be able to kill inisde and outside the womb based on Doctors testimony alone and the desire of the guardian (pregnant mother or spouse, or parent), and give no credence to the (soon to be) deceased. I think this is the ultimate goal of SOME, not all, who want her removed from the tube.

I think you'rer in denial ... the governor is seeking a way to avoid doing something that is controversial, and shift the blame to democrats as a political empowerment ploy. The democrats have been playing with lives for decades. The Pubbies are just getting into the methodology. Give them a little time. They too will be manipulating the public with issues of life and death ... and that's what this smacks of in Flordia, political manipulations!

Florida doctors? I have had some Florida doctors refer to other Florida doctors as "Medical Quacks", which is the ultimate slam.

Does anyone have a link to text or audio of it? Thanks. There is no text or audio. Terry did not have a living will which is part of the problem. 'Her wishes' are only what Michael Schiavo says they are. Personally, I think he would be in a great deal of trouble if she were able to talk.

Reply I just got
Thank you for writing to Governor Bush and expressing interest in the
well-being of Terri Schindler Schiavo. He has asked me to respond on his
behalf. The Governor is very concerned about Terri, and his thoughts and
prayers are with the Schindler family.
The Governor, more than any other state official, has a responsibility to
ensure that the laws be faithfully executed and to give a voice to the
citizens of the state. It is because of these dual responsibilities that
the Governor felt compelled to write a letter to the circuit court judge
expressing an opinion on this difficult matter and to file an amicus brief
to accompany the Schindlers' federal lawsuit. The Governor is disappointed
by the decisions made by the state and federal courts in these cases.
However, the Florida Constitution prevents the Governor from acting further.
Florida law gives the courts, not the Governor, authority over
guardianships. For that reason, despite his great concern for Terri's life,
the Governor has no power to intervene further.
Thank you again for writing.
Sincerely,
Lauren O'Connor
Office of
Citizens' Services

The media will just not stop saying that she is in a vegetative state.
Our pathetic efforts have been proven useless and impotent.
The only thing that might have gotten the attention needed was massive civil disobedience to prevent Sciavo and his goons from having access to the woman now held under armed guard at this vile house of death. Hundreds , even thousands of us shoyuld have shown up. We didn't. We moan and wring our hands and pray but do not act. It seems we never act.
The other side does. They get attention and results with mob even rent a mob tactics.
We seem to believe that we are above that. Prayers just aren't working folks. America is being transformed before our eyes into a frightening, ugly place. Yet we will not take even modest action.
They other side knows that this is our weakness. This is best illustrated by a particularly vile chant I once heard the pro-abortin zealots used to taunt pro-life people after a court decision affirming the pro-abortionists.<>P>"Pray, yuo'll need it. Your cause has been defeated". Cruel but true. Prayer alone will do nothing but eventually lead us into re-education centers or worse.

No one here would in these days be critical of anyone who helped a runaway slave get out of the south to the north to freedom...
Yet many would stand in the way of Terri...now a slave of the state...to escape with her parents help to Canada to safety and life...

That's my guess, I hope the bastard chokes on it and dies.
This is no way to treat your spouse, whom you supposedly love and is the mother of your kids.

Well a Living Will is law. Word of mouth is NOT if there is no record of their conversation. it's over, her parents win.

After witnessing the functioning of the grossly liberal courts and judges in Florida, it is apparent why Gore and his clinton hit-team chose to use the courts in Florida to try and steal the 2000 election. I'm learning to hate the democrat party machine ... and the Pubbies are beginning to raise my hackles, also!
