In other words, Davis is setting up the Democrats for another future Conservative backlash down the road, assuming the Democrats haven't managed to gerrymander the opposition out of power permanently.

Concerning your comment regarding "setting up for another Conservative backlash down the road" -- That I doubt. Look at the nature of the bills passed.
The backlash which brought about the present recall were based on poor leadership and the state's declining fiscal health. Moral issues were never part of the debate.
As a matter of fact, the suggested immoral behavior admitted to by AS wasn't even considered in the public debate leading up to the vote. Sensational accusations were being tossed around with the shame and outrage of a Jerry Springer show.
Moral issues in California are simply part of the political game. They have no weight beyond the political capitol they represent. Both parties bear responsibility for this, and the inevitable consequences that will follow.
As far as gerrymandering...you can only gerrymander a majority vote if the majority is there. Unfortunately it is.
