Rick Scott pushes back on GOP plan to use taxpayer funds for Trump ballroom

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) is pushing back on a Republican proposal to spend up to $400 million in federal funds on President Donald Trump’s planned White House ballroom, citing the nation’s mounting debt and deficit spending.

Scott’s comments came after Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced legislation Monday that would help finance the ballroom project with federal dollars. Graham argued the facility would serve security and operational purposes beyond hosting events.

“Underneath it will be a lot of military stuff. There will be a Secret Service annex, and we pay for it by offsetting it with customs fees,” Graham said at a press conference. He added that private donations could still be used for furnishings and decor.

Graham said Trump personally urged him to move the project forward, calling it necessary “for future presidents.”

The congressional push follows Saturday’s attempted assassination of Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

“What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE,” Trump wrote in a Sunday Truth Social post.

Every once in a while, Graham does the right thing. This isn’t that while.

I am all for the ballroom, if donors will step up and fund it. The federal fiscal situation needs debt reduction 100 times more than additional spending, particular if it is not really essential spending. How about a one dollar voluntary donation on the 2027 income tax return??

Senator Scott said he might run for president, in 2028. He knows this action would help him, in the primaries.

I think Trump already has the funds from billionaire buddies.
I remember Steve Witcoff giving Trump $1 million for his campaign in 2016.

Ask Lindsey Graham, he’s the one putting a fly in the ointment. He really needs to “spend more time with his family.”

Disappointing. One of the important parts of the project is that it was not going to use federal funds and was a gift from select donors. For anyone to try to mix in funds at this point is going to lose some of the shine on the project and misrepresent what was a good thing for the country. A gift from the republicans worth something.

He’s got 0% chance. I know he would be way down my list.

Me too. And I personally think any revamping of a national landmark or space like the Kennedy Center is GOOD use of taxpayer money — but the optics, PR roll-out, and timing of this particular project have been a bit all over the place.

The reason for last nights DS planned attack, show people how important it is for Government to build a ballroom because private money cannot. Everything government does is a rug pull, scam and misdirection.

After the incidence at the Hilton, there was unanimous texting in support of the importance of the ballroom. Surely to be named the Donald John Trump ballroom.

Trump said the construction is privately funded; it should remain so. They need to quit spending other people’s money.
