Drawing on a rich body of critical scholarship and cultural texts from diverse academic areas as well as students' personal experiences, the program addresses issues and questions often overlooked in other disciplines. In addition to providing a general education, the program offers a set of analytical tools which will serve as a valuable stepping stone for a variety of four-year degrees(including a degree in Women's Studies) and which will assist students in embarking on a wide range of careers, such as, law, law enforcement, social work, psychology, medical fields, education, communications, journalism, or business.

Upon successful completion of the Liberal Arts and Sciences: Women’s and Gender Studies Emphasis / A.A. Degree program, graduates will be able to:

1.Identify and describe the values, tenets, and actions to be taken to advocate for change of current gender roles and equality of gender identities.

2.Analyze and explain the history and impact of gender role conceptions in the United States and other cultures.

3.Identify and explain the historical and contemporary contributions women have made to society, politics, science, art, and other areas.

4.Identify the indicators for and describe the mechanisms of oppression and discrimination of women.

5.Analyze and describe the relationship between mechanisms of oppression/discrimination based on gender and other aspects of identity including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, class, socioeconomic status and sexuality.

6.Accurately apply the resources provided by interdisciplinary feminist scholarship and the use of critical thinking skills.
