Benjamin Franklin had observed in roughly the century before that almost any whites who were adopted into the local Indian tribes would want to go back the first chance they got after being "rescued" by other whites.

If you're not familiar w/ the story of Étienne Brûlé, you'd be interested to learn about him. He was a young Frenchmen that Samuel de Champlain sent into the woods to live with and learn from Indians in order to better develop the lucrative French fur trade, the first of the "coureur des bois." Brûlé joined a Huron community, learned the language, and adopted their dress and customs. He would meet up w/ Champlain after several years at a time to report and guide on his discoveries (a goal was to find the "great ocean" that the French hoped was the Pacific, but was more likely Lake Superior or the Hudson Bay).

French priests condemned Brûlé for taking on Indian culture, especially in dress and sexual habits. You can see what they were thinking in later artistic depictions of the Coureurs des Bois, usually posing with a squaw or two... Ironically, Brûlé's life ended shortly after being accused of treason by the French for helping a British ship navigate the St. Lawrence and then, having escaped that, he was captured by Senecas who tortured but did not kill him, then upon escape and return to the Hurons was killed by them for suspicion of having cooperated w/ the Senecas.

Interesting stuff! Poor guy couldn’t catch a break at the end. And nobody condemns the Huron for driving the Siouxian tribes from their ancestral lands in the Ohio Valley, just the paleface who came later.
