By telegraphing their intentions a year in advance, they are giving the media and the Obama administration plenty of time to figure out how to turn this into a massive PR problem for the Republicans.

By that time it may not matter--Trump after failing to become the nominee will have launched his independent campaign, guaranteeing a Democrat victory, even if Bernie Sanders is the nominee.
