See 1860. Interesting, indeed.

Not that good an example. Lincoln took clear majorities in enough states to have given him 173 out of is eventual 180 electoral votes. His popular vote percentage is skewed by the fact that he took almost no votes in the slave states. A modern 3 way election wouldn't be the same. In a three way race then Trump and the Republican split the vote and the Democrat wins. If it's a four way race, as someone suggested earlier, then hoo boy! Anything could happen then.

And say that it is a four way race and it winds up going to the House of Representatives. Do the Republicans stick with the party line and vote for Jeb? Or do they vote for Trump? Do Democrats stay will Hillary or do they leave the farm and go with Sanders?

No.

No because there’s been a sea change in the numbers of voters who have registered independent and most all of the change is conservative.

The biggest voter affiliation today is Independent at 42%. In 2008 it was only 24% and it grew in 2012 which is why Romney did not win the election because he barely took half of the Independents when if he had been conservative he would have taken enough to put him over the top.

42% is a mass of people that added to other demographics are so large that the 31% democrats and the 28% republicans can’t win against in a 3-way race. Two-thirds by low end estimating of the current 42% are conservative.

5% from the democrat’s 31% are Reagan democrats and will vote for Trump/Cruz.

Up to 18% from the republicans 28% (64% of the 28%) are the GOP’s conservative base and most will vote for Trump/Cruz.

Then there are millions of grassroots conservatives that are awakening and Ted Cruz has tapped into this.

The Independents are continuing to grow as a percentage and most all of the growth is conservative.

No way is this shaping up to be a repeat of Perot’s folly in 1992. Things are much much different now.
