Eisenhower did get almost 40% of the black vote in 1956, but you’re correct, the trend had been for almost total Dem domination of the black vote for many decades.
More than a trend, it went republican in every election until 1936, then it flipped and has gone democrat in every election.
There were never trends, it appears to be a group wide decision.
