Cruz is Reaganesque all right—But remember he lost the first time in 1976. Had to wait 4 years to win. Maybe Cruz will need to wait til 2020. He has many great qualities. BUT Reagan was Governor of California—Maybe Cruz needs to be Gov. of Texas first???

That was against an incumbent (though unelected) president who had just recently replaced a disgraced president. We're not in that situation in the Republican Party right now. Governor of Texas is thought to be the weakest governorship in all the 50 states. The Lieutenant Governor is actually more powerful in many ways, especially legislatively.
