It's the right thing to do. Roberts is not God awful - but Harry Reid retaining Majority Leader status is. For Palin, this is all about stopping Obama Care, and for all his flaws, Roberts is better on that than his opponent by a mile. This is the adult leagues here - the primaries are over.
