Here in northern New Hampshire, where the population is about 98% white, our local elections are in March, similar to Ferguson.

We can figure out when to vote for what and whom.

If some folks in Ferguson are too lazy or dumb, that's their problem.

Imagine how much worse things would be if they got the people they would vote for elected.

These “unfair” practices about elections....I’ve figured out at least two decades ago. It is a rigged system that we’ve simply accepted, and both parties manipulate the rules to their standards. I don’t think it relates to being lazy or dumb.

If you go and ask any local guy about this upcoming city council election....six out of ten will tell you that they didn’t even know local elections were coming up. Parties rely on this quietness theme and a marginal turn-out to keep things at the normal level.

If you did the local elections in a charged-up period of national politics...then you’d watch rapid turn-overs of long term politicians, which hurts your local lobbyists (yeah, even at the local level....you’ve got lobbyists). So it makes sense to keep the barrel as empty as possible on interest and the mass public knowing about the upcoming election for local folks.

For the 3.5 years that I lived in Arlington Virginia....they had two local elections and I doubt if more than twenty percent of the adult population ever showed up to vote. If you asked anyone who was on the county commission...roughly ninety-five percent would shake their heads. This is how the political forces (both parties) want the game to run.
