I look back on 2008 and wonder how we ended up with such a wretched group of contenders. 2016 isn’t shaping up very well so far, either.

I blame George W. Bush for a lot of that. He did very little in the way of bolstering future GOP leaders.

It’s also difficult to be a candidate these days, given the intensity of attention by the media. Very few of us have led perfect lives, and the media can be bloodthirsty.
