"Yes, Palin Did Stop That Bridge, by Senator Jim DeMint, Wall Street Journal."
Under mounting political pressure over pork projects, Congress stripped the earmark or stipulation that the money be used for the airport, but still sent the money to the state for any use it deemed appropriate. Until it became a national embarrassment she was pushing for it and even expressed offense that it was being referred to as a "Bridge to Nowhere". The state took the money for other projects. IOW, the money was never returned even though it did not end up going to the bridge. Alaska ended the bridge project because the "project was $329 million short of full funding". http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20908207/ns/politics/t/alaska-ends-plan-bridge-nowhere/ Again, this was in 2007, which was long after the outcry from anti-spending groups made the project a poster child for wasteful spending resulting in it coming up short of funds. The project was ended because it came up short of funding following the national outcry. Trying to spin this as a heroic effort to kill a wasteful spending project is ludicrous.
