"President Carter so dominates the American political scene now that his margin over Ronald Reagan in a post-Iowa trial heat has risen to an overwhelming 65-31 percent."
Also, Time magazine ran a big story in March of that year basically saying Reagan was unelectable. Gallup had a poll in that time frame with Reagan down 25 points.

Nonsense. Reagan barely lost the nomination in 76 to incumbent Gerry Ford, and in 1980 got over 50% of votes in a race that had a strong 3rd part contender. This whole meme about Reagans unpopularity is a myth. It wasnt until after he was elected that his popularity took a dive. In November of 82, Reagans job disapproval rating was 47%, the same as Obamas is today.
