Former President Jimmy Carter: 'No doubt' Democrats will take heavy losses on Election Day
The Dallas Morning News ^ | October 28, 2010 | Tom Benning

Posted on 10/28/2010 10:13:46 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

In the 29 years since Jimmy Carter left the Oval Office, he's earned a global reputation as a humanitarian, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Carter, who turned 86 this month, continues to offer political opinions on his career and on current events, most recently in his new book, White House Diary, an annotated edition of the private journals that he kept while president.

Carter is to visit the Grapevine Sam's Club, at 1701 W. State Highway 114, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to sign copies of his book. He spoke this week by telephone with Staff Writer Tom Benning, discussing partisanship, election campaigns and President Barack Obama. Here are excerpts:

Q: What surprised you the most as you reviewed and annotated these diary entries?

A: How many of the issues I faced when I was president are still on the Oval Office for President Obama to deal with today. Not only foreign policy, like China and the Mideast and North Korea and Iran, but also domestic affairs – energy policy and health care. I tabulated almost 40 issues that were important to me and also important to President Obama.

Q: How would you compare your presidency to Obama's thus far?

A: I see some dramatic differences, the most dramatic being my close working relationship with the Republican leadership and the bipartisan support that I had. Republicans gave me great support, particularly toward the end of my term, after Ted Kennedy took a lot of the liberal, Democratic support away from me. That's something President Obama doesn't have. He hasn't had any support because the Republicans have been completely irresponsible in dealing with the president, even when he proposes issues that they themselves have previously supported...

How sad that we lost President Reagan, yet this man looks to live to 100.

He said he was surprised that issues with Iran are still a WH concern. Geez, anyone tell him, he created those issues? What an abominal piece of sh*t.

Poor Pres. Carter is so astute, after months and months of polling data,to make such a statement? Pres. Carter should go over to Pakistan and crawl in the same hole that Osama is living in. Carter is so irrelevant than its not funny anymore?

Old Peanuthead is living proof (and, unfortunately, Ronald Reagan is deceased proof) of the old adage, "Only the good die young."

I used to think Carter will be the first president to be embalmed. Now I think it will be Obama.

"Republicans have been completely irresponsible in dealing with the president, even when he proposes issues that they themselves have previously supported..."

Trojan horse. Jimmy's being dishonest with that statement and he knows it.

Surely Reagan would have had enough class to shut up and go live the rest of his life doing worthy deeds without throwing potshots and monkeywrenches at his successors. So, were he alive, he would be no foil for Carter.

Crass is crass.

And Jimmy will be there as a shining example to all of them on how to nurse a bitter grudge for decades about the loss.

I found him to be much more of an ideologue than the press ever let on. He was surrounded by cronies and LBJ hacks.

You’re right, he is an ideologue. It comes through loud and clear with everything he says.

For the first time in his life, Jimmah has a really, really good chance of being correct!
