Former vice presidential candidate and current Fox News contributor Sarah Palin said last night that the Republican Party should merge with tea partiers.
Fox's Greta Van Susteren asked if tea party candidates would end up siphoning votes from GOP nominees, or if the movement will "merge with the Republican Party."
"They need to merge," Palin said. "Definitely, they need to merge. I think those who are wanting the divisions and the divisiveness and the controversy -- those are the ones who don't believe in the message. And they're the ones, I think, stirring it up."
As we've reported at TPMmuckraker, the tea party movement has been increasingly divided. Much of the friction has been over the national tea party convention to be held in Nashville. Critics say the convention, with its expensive tickets and for-profit organizer, doesn't jive with true tea party values. Yesterday, we reported that Reps. Michele Bachmann and Martha Blackburn have dropped out.
Palin, whose speaking fees are rumored to be around $100,000, told Van Susteren she is still on for the convention. "You betcha," she said.
On the divisiveness, she continued, "We need to ignore that and we need to forge ahead with a cohesive message. It's a common sense message. It, again, is, Government, limit yourself so that the private sector, our families, free individuals can grow and thrive and prosper and enjoy America's freedom!"
As for whether the tea partiers want to merge with Republicans, that's a different story.
I think she will have to pay the taxes on it. One thing that I can’t get out of my mind is why did Michelle Bachman drop out. I love her and see this only as a sign that Tea Party is becoming an elitist organization. What common person can afford 560 dollars for a dinner?
we cannot win nationally with both a tea party and GOP running against the Dems...no way..no matter how bad we want it
Glenn Beck is so out in the fringe with his constant Republicans and Democrats are the same, he can only be seen as a disrupter and and a tool of the anti war NeoLeft
He is from a family of Democrats and is sucked into the Ron Paul NeoLeft
Back around 2002, Palin could have run under AIP banner in Ak and might have won. She didn't, said her personal gain wasn't worth the chance of getting a dem in there.
We need good repubs like Palin running for office; not the RINOS we currently see. Primarys and the People's support will decide.
Ya know, I've watched Palin since early 90's. You can trust her judgement to do the right thing; what's best for the people. Why she had such a high rating up here.
Everybody out the village is snaring snowshoes and looking for a winter moose. Won't be long and the spring ducks will be flying; everybody be eatin duck then.
A lot of common people spend money on a lot of stupid things, like super bowl tickets.
The way I see it, ‘Tea Parties’ all over can select a representative, raise money, have the person go there, participate, come back and share about what was seen, hear and talked about. If we start seeing ‘elitism’ every time someone or something tries to raise some money, we are no better than liberals.
I don’t think a third party can win now and would split conservatives and make it easy for progressives
we had 4 parties in 1860 and Lincoln won with just 39% of the popular vote
not sure we need to relearn that history in yet another sharply divided time period in our history
i live where there are plenty of gravestones to commemorate how well that turned out
Agreed. I say Amen!
Very interesting post especially the superbowl analogy which is very valid. This seems to be the only “for profit” tea party so perhaps giving them the benefit of the doubt is the right thing.
Hostile take-over? YES!
Another Amen. I am always baffled by folks who think that relinquishing their registration status as Republicans is anything but a symbolic protest at the price of sacrificing their ability to be part of the solution. I don't like the way the Republican party has gone, but I also know that if I re-register "Independent" in a huff, I'll have just relinquished any power I have to try to steer the GOP in the direction I want it to go. I always liked Larry Elder, but my respect and admiration for him SOARED when he manned up and re-registered from Libertarian to Republican. He's a good guy to have on our side, and I'm glad he's somebody who now votes in our primaries.
Make that TWO FReepers' opinion. I think your post is spot-on.
Yep, the stripes are really starting to show.
“Here is my point.”
I understand and agree with your point.
thanks
A JUDAS GOAT? That seems pretty strong don’t you think?
And how close was Hoffman? In liberal New York??? Why don't you think tea party-endorsed candidates can WIN in conservative states and even some swing states against Liberals and RINOS ???
What's interesting here is we're showing less confidence in this happening than the GOP is. That's why they're wanting to merge....Because THEY KNOW WE CAN DO IT !!! The establishment Republican (RINOs) fear the Tea Party just as much as the Democrats do. And what about all the Democrats resigning? Is that because of the GOP??
The Tea Party Movement began without the GOP and without Sarah Palin and needs neither to succeed. It needs patriotic Americans dedicated to ridding our government from the parasites that are destroying it.
I completely agree.
That only tells me what I already knew: that L. Ron Paul is a cancer upon the GOP.
First throw out all the whiney, handwringing snivelling spineless RINOs....then maybe we can talk.
Note I said “nationally” dear as in presidential election
of course if the planets align right we can win local and maybe even state wide but no way can we win a national election with two parties on the right...no way
I will stand by that.
