"We are about two steps from that point today."

And those steps are working their way through Congress right now, with the boisterous support of most FReepers, a Constitutional Amendment defining marriage.

We are pushing to grant the Federal government jurisdiction to forever define marriage, giving away the right of the separate States to do it.

I would agree that nothing good can come of the proposed amendment. IMHO, it is an misguided attempt to incrementally decrease the amount of evil. Better still to get the government out of the marriage business altogether, don't you think?

Call it Equal Protection, if you have a taste for judicial activism. All laws regarding marriage are discriminatory because they treat married and unmarried people differently. If the law were neutral on the issue of marriage, this entire question would go away, and we would all be treated by our government as individial citizens.
