I know exactley what you are talking about. An article in rolling stone last year detailed it. Its a phenomenon thats seems to be limited mostly to San Francisco. When the article came out, several other publications jumped on the bandwagon to check the story out.

Long story short, the leadership of gay groups refuted it, and claimed the whole thing was poorley researched and was wrong, however, individual gays and doctors who were treating them, said it was true. The story essentially died after awhile.

The 25% figure was incorrect but the film documents that real life bug chasers do indeed exist. I posted another article on it yesterday, entitled Acting up. There are some folks who want you to believe that because the 25% figure was too high the film is bogus. It's not and I recommend you read the sad news at the above link.
