Call them the "Butt Cops."
The city Health Department is hiring a dozen inspectors for special nighttime duty to enforce the city's tough new smoking ban - which is just weeks away, The Post has learned.
The tobacco inspectors - called "environmental technicians" - will bolster the force of 100 health inspectors who work daytime hours, said spokeswoman Sandra Mullin.

Haven't we been told that prohibition doesn't work - can't work? Aren't we facing only a matter of time before puffeasies proliferate, resulting in the mobs getting a stranglehold on our country? Only because we wouldn't let a bunch of addicts poison the air?

"environmental technicians"? We should be chilled to the bone at the dangerous Orwellian stupidity of the Left.

"The law cannot be changed, but anyone who wants to come and give their comments is more than welcome," Mullin said. This is where Mullin and I part ways in regards to how our country works. Laws can be changed by elected representatives...the problem this go-around is: New York elected the wrong people. Maybe next time, they will make better choices and this, as well as any other totalitarian efforts to restrict freedom will be struck from the books.

Our City had butt busters in place before the ban even took effect, our police no longer respond to break and enter or fender benders, butttt they do hang out in bars, waiting for smokers to fall into their trap.

But owners could be in a tough spot if they are required to make people leave - and cops could be facing an increase in calls."That's their prerogative [to call the police]," Mullin said. "That's not something that we're recommending. We ask people not to put establishments in that difficult position."
Yeh, right.
Who's going to ask the drunken 275 pound gentleman to extinguish his smoking material more than once?
One time and then call the cops.
It might be better to call the cops immediately upon refusal. Tie up the police resources and see what they do then.
