[history]
Washington -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein and President Bush seem headed for a showdown over her effort to renew the federal assault weapons ban after the administration hedged Tuesday on a presidential pledge to support the renewal.
The semiautomatic assault weapons bill, which barely passed in 1994, stands as a legislative hallmark of Feinstein's 10 years in the Senate. It is due to expire in September 2004, unless Congress votes to reauthorize it and Bush signs the bill. In his 2000 presidential campaign, Bush came out for renewal and for an additional provision to ban the import of ammunition- feeding devices of 10 bullets or more.

DiFi's swingin' at the Tarbaby again.
Of course, there are more than a few RINOs who are quaking in their penny loafers over this. I just hope that Karl Rove realizes how toxic this issue is for the Democrats. Letting this drag out into the election season for a final, high-profile sunsetting of the law in '04 would actually help the President. The same hard core "gunnuts" that helped defeat Gore would turn out in droves to re-elect the President if he allows the ban to go away. (On the downside, they'll also stay away in droves if he wimps out and signs the extension!)

"I am quite familiar with firearms," Feinstein said. "I became mayor as a product of assassination. " Is she admitting something here?

Perhaps someone would be good enough to post that one pic of her; with an AK-47 in hand, her finger on the trigger, and that Postal Employee gleam in her eye.

It is my understanding that the president-elect of the United States has indicated his clear support for extending the assault weapons ban, and I will be pleased to move forward with that position," Ashcroft said in response to a question from Feinstein. Say what? This better not be true.

The so called assault weapons ban needs to sunset on September 14, 2004. If it does not GWB will be a one term president.

I don't know who Diane is, but I do know that when only government has the guns, citizens die.

Looks like we will have a Democratic president in 2004 and he will have all these expanded Patriot Act powers so many freepers champion.

Dianne ReGrette is the marxist congressworm from Denver who shows up anywhere guns are being banned. That looks like her mug in the middle. (BARF again)

I agree with you. I've been very happy with his presidency thus far. There have been only a few bad notes here and there for me. But if he wimps out on this, I'll have to be screaming drunk before I'll be able to get myself to the voting booth.

If Bush destroys the terrorists, topples Saddam without a shot, cowes the North Koreans, and pumps up the economy to the point where it's practially raining gold, I will still abandon him and hate him forever if he extends the unconstitutional anti-American "assault weapons" ban.
