Why anyone would give money to (through) the United Way so they can skim their take is beyond me. Pick your favorite charity or cause, and give to them.

My sister had polio in the early 50's. Later, she needed an operation to correct the scoliosis is her back...to the tune of around $40,000. This would have certainly bankrupted my father, a Policeman at the time. So, he went to United foundation Torch Drive for help. He was told he made too much money to qualify. Wrong color? $5,000 dollars a year was his salary. The Mothers March of Dimes came to the rescue. My sister became a poster child for the March, and later had her operation

Back in the days when I was a worker bee (for a company) I remember the angst felt by the cubicle-thralls who'd convinced themselves that they 'had to' contribute to the United Fund. (which later morphed into the United Way)

Slaves all, they assured me that 'the fix was in', 'we've GOT to give something', 'they'll do something awful if our department doesn't give at the 100% level', etc., etc...

Contrarian that I am, I always made quite the show of tearing up my UF card and throwing it in the trash.

It didn't shorten my career there by a minute. (dammit!)

GEEEZZZZ....HOW FRIGGING STUPID ARE PEOPLE....UNITED WAY IS A SCAM, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SCAM.,..THEIR PRES AND CFO WENT TO FED PRISON....THEY SCAM BUSINESSES....MAINLY THEY SCAM THEM OUT OF DONATIONS BECAUSE THESE BUSINESSES ARE LAZY AND GET A TAX BREAK FOR DONATING...THEY DONOT CARE IF THEY GET RIPPED OFF OR THERE MONEY REALLY HELPS...TWISTED..BUT TRUE...
