Good post. I am even now looking for my dog-eared copy of Robert A. Heinlein's 1948 political manual, "TAKE BACK YOUR GOVERNMENT". He was a Californian when he wrote it (although born in Missouri) and he stressed the critical importance of large numbers of "foot soldiers" in elections- along with good organization and supervision of their efforts.

I think his points are still valid- even enhanced by modern communications, like the Net (and FR!)

As a nation, we have not enforced our borders, and now we have a lot of Latino voters, (ahem, new Dem voters), and Cali will be a Dem state for some time to come, maybe forever. We did not do anything about illegal immigration, and now we pay the price. Of course, a inept campaign by Simon & Co did not help matters either.....
