Attack, Attack, Attack! Go Simon Go!
Yes, ma'am!

From AP, via www.sfgate.com:

Simon seeks offensive with new ad as Davis seeks apology

ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer

(10-11) 18:41 PDT LOS ANGELES (AP) --

Republican Bill Simon stumped in Mexico and took on Gov. Gray Davis in a stinging new attack ad Friday as he sought to regain the offensive after an embarrassing retreat from a false allegation against the governor.

Davis continued to demand an apology from Simon for wrongly accusing him of illegally accepting a campaign check in the state Capitol four years ago.

"The least he could do is express an apology to me. You do not accuse a sitting governor of committing a crime unless you have all the facts," Davis said after addressing a health insurance conference in Los Angeles. He called the episode "unforgivable."

Simon aides said there would be no apology and insisted Davis was the one who should say he was sorry.

"Where's his apology for misrepresenting Bill Simon in every ad he's aired?" asked Simon press secretary Mark Miner.

Simon did apologize Friday to Al Angele, the former head of the California Organization of Police and Sheriffs shown in two 1998 photos giving Davis a check.

COPS and Simon claimed this week that the photos were taken in the state Capitol, only to acknowledge a day later that they were taken in Santa Monica. They said the mistake was a good-faith error.

Angele said Thursday he would reconsider a threat of legal action if he got a personal written apology. Simon satisfied the demand with a three-sentence faxed letter late Friday.

"I want to personally apologize to you for what happened," Simon wrote.

Meanwhile the Simon campaign released its first new attack ad since August. Davis has been blanketing the airwaves with positive and negative spots, but Simon's fund-raising disadvantage has allowed him to air ads only sporadically.

The campaign received a $400,000 infusion Thursday from the Republican National Committee -- part of a promised $1 million from national Republicans.

The new ad shows negative newspaper headlines and quotes about Davis in white lettering on a black background as foreboding music plays. "Had enough? Fire Gray Davis," it concludes...

Gray Davis has abused the trust of the people of California long enough. With his pay-to-play governance and 12-hour-a-day fundraising, he has diminished the respect of the Governor's Office and sold our state to the highest bidder.

We, the people of the State of California, refuse to take it any longer; we will fire Gray Davis on November 5th.

Thank you for joining us here at firedavis.com. Please look around, send a pink slip to Gray Davis, see what bad, bad things Davis has done, and see how France has superseded California under Gray Davis' leadership.
