OUR LEGISLATORS in Sacramento should discard the notion that smokers -- often down at the heels and ailing -- are a major solution for the state's budget impasse.
Democratic politicians who back Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson's proposal of a $2.13-a-pack increase in the cigarette tax -- to $3 a pack -- are fooling no one. They care little about saving smokers from the ravages of their habit. If the pols did care, California's investment in anti-smoking education would not be shrinking 45 percent between this fiscal year and next.

Where was the SF Chronicle when the anti smoking fascists started pushing this stuff... Loudly pushing for the settlement. They were told that this was just a moneygrabbing ploy. Now they start complaining about what they played a major role in creating.
