Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has a narrow lead in a poll among potential voters. The poll was conducted by News10 and SurveyUSA. Pollsters asked 861 likely California voters whom they would vote for if the election were held today. Nearly 47 percent said they would vote for Simon, and 45 percent said they would vote for Gov. Gray Davis.
Eight percent were undecided.
The margin of error is 3.4 percent.
Simon's lead was greatest in the Central Valley. Davis had the most support in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
According to the poll, Simon led pro-life voters by 33 points. Davis led pro-choice voters by 16 points.
Men preferred Simon by 6 points. Women preferred Davis by 4 points.

Davis is Catholic, too, though he only uses his religion when it's convenient for him. The difference is, Simon TRIES to live his faith, and Davis runs away from his faith.

It was a likely voter poll.

No they don't apologize just slink away to spread more ill-informed criticism.

Davis is Catholic, tooWow! I did not know that. He's made such a point about being the biggest baby-killer in the race, I'm shocked to hear he's Catholic. Another reason to vote him out: I distrust any politician who does not integrate his faith and the character qualities of his faith into who he is as a person.

I agree that Davis will definitely go after the abortion issue (I'll bet the Davis campaign has a commercial linking Simon to abortion doctor killers already in the can) but your remedy is all wrong. Nobody likes a candidate who tries to downplay their beliefs. Simon should simply state what he believes and why, and move on to the next issue.

Given the extreme leftist performance of the economy busting, gay rights loving, tax and spending, regulation happy, illegal alien apologist, socialist/marxist legislature in this state, it is imperative that we elect Simon as a counter to that group.
What I'm wondering is if he's got any fight in him. Consider the (appropriate) comparisons to Bush. President Bush has yet to veto anything sent to him by the leftist Senate and the moderate House. Will Simon just allow bills to become laws here or will he be willing to veto bills until the government shuts down. Simply moderating the far left legislature is enough to make him a success as Governor. Given that this state loves Dianne Feinstein (compared to Barbara Boxer, a moderate) it wouldn't surprise me if the state voted for Simon just to have divided government.
This is why I'd like to see Simon take the gloves out in this campaign. To prove that he's willing to later!
(P.S.-No I don't consider Feinstein a moderate in real terms. But compared to Boxer.....)

You are right. I went back and read the original article. Reasoning remains the same, however. The trend looks good.

This is why I'd like to see Simon take the gloves out in this campaign. To prove that he's willing to later! I'm sure Simon will take the gloves off ... have you gone to his web site to view his campaign commercials? They're great! (Especially Maids)
However, he needs to wait until people are engaged. Right now, most people in California don't really care about the election. He can't shoot his wad too early. The primary strategy was good ... it'll work in the general as well.
