SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Gray Davis on Monday signed the nation's first law to cut greenhouse gases from cars and light trucks, a move environmentalists said was a critical step to fight global warming.
The law orders California's Air Resources Board to write rules curbing emissions, mainly carbon dioxide and methane, starting with the 2009 model year.

So tell me how it is the the california air resources board considers more, or knows more about cars and the environment than the auto manufacturers. Deliver me from arrogant government, and may californians walk as an example of intelligent environmentalism. greyout davis an unknown assemblywoman from l a and willing voters for the bill, and voila, california out front leading the way... to where we would like to know?

Funny how the title isn't:
Davis Signs Bill to Tax Larger Vehicles Because people won't buy the newer vehicles, this bill will likely INCREASE emissions over what they would have been.

He doesn't care about the environment, the point is to create more big government control. How do SUV manufacturers produce the vehicles if this were to become law? They can't make special models simply for CA, ALL would have to be redesigned. Davis understands the size of CA's market and is counting on the ability to create further government power to satisfy the manufacturer's need to maintain that market. It just so happens that environment was his means to that end.

I found this on the epa web site:
http://www.epa.gov/omswww/18-youdo.htm
AIR CONDITIONING:
Use of a vehicle air conditioner increases load on the engine. This can increase emissions and decrease fuel economy. Try opening the window or the fresh air vent to cool the inside of your vehicle. Also, park in the shade if you can to prevent the car from heating up in the sun. Besides keeping the interior temperature of your car more comfortable, you will lessen the pollution and waste that occurs when gasoline evaporates from the engine and gas tank.
HIGH ENGINE LOADS:
Your car burns more gas and emits more pollution when the engine is operating under high load; that is, when it is working especially hard. Extra load is created by running the air conditioner, quick accelerations, high-speed driving, climbing grades, revving the engine, and carrying extra weight.
Now, I seems to me that if car manufacturers limited the speed of automobiles in California (use GPS to locate where the autos are) to less than 30 MPH and to disconnect air conditioners on all California automobiles, it would be a snap to meet the new requirements.

I heard that 46% of new cars bought in California are SUVs and trucks...lotta folks to piss off in an election year just fer a few kudos from the EnviroWhackos!!
This is Leftist Extremism in its rawest form and will fail 'cuz you can't force the Sheeple to buy automobiles they don't want.

If Davis signed a law repealing the law of gravity thus reducing air polution from airplanes, would the enviro-nuts still say these things.
I bet they would!

Freedom...America...great, ain't it?
Still, fossil fuels WILL run out! There is no denying that' it's a fact of life!
For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone, living in the urban splendor most do, needs an SUV! Four wheel drive, 7 liter engines...in the city? Nope! It is sensless...so if the tax the damn things, so be it. It IS a free country and if yu want an SUV, fine! But common sense should tell you that an SUV, four wheel drive or "dualie" in city sprawl is simply irresponsible, both envirnmenatlly and fiscally.
Flame away, but how many city dwellers turn trhose hubs (or know how) and get into "four low"....and for what reason?

On what date will fossil fuels run out, and what school of thought says fossils are what equal fuel. Hubs are found in rudimentary 4x4 vehicles not in the normal suv. My sense says there is sufficient fuel of many kinds to run what man develops into the unforseeable future. We aren't in the habit of going backwards. Development is always forward, that isn't to say that some of the old ways are not still good or viable, but, until you don't care what your neighbor buys with his hard earned dollars, you will remain on the leftist, socialist side of life.
