Actually, what they will do is collect the tax when the car is sold. That way voters don't have to pay it every year, they will only get that little 'surprise' when they go to sell it. This will end up gettin' real uggly. But it certainly is an opportunity for the Republicans to make some hay...

Why would they risk the revenue? You might run the car till junked or your junker might get "stolen". You might "break" the odometer at that point etc. Whereas if they they make it part of the law that every car have a working odometer and check it at smog time they got ya.

Oh yeah. There is NO Law TOO STUPID for the California state government to enact.

What will they do about cars sold out of state? Looks like a BIG loophole to me.

Shoot. Sell your SUV in Nevada next time! I can see SUV dealers lining the borders of the State...and a lively trade in establishing quick out-of-state residences (sort of like Las Vegas marriages...and divorces) to qualify for out-of-state plates.


But surely this won't fly...not in the Land of the White Bronco.
