[history]
Gov. Gray Davis this spring blocked efforts to impose a new $22-million tax on the timber industry, three months after leading timber interests donated $105,000 to his reelection campaign.
The legislative analyst's office suggested the timber tax hike, and several Democratic lawmakers embraced it as a way to help close the state's $23.6-billion budget deficit. But the governor successfully opposed it during budget talks, according to legislators who participated in those discussions.

Just close your eyes and imagine the network media feeding frenzy over the endless Gray Davis corruption if he was a REPUBLICAN governor of the largest state that was considered a presidential frontrunning candidate.

Tax on the timber industry? - Let's look into the old 'campaign donation' envelope.
No tax. They gave to 'the office'.

Geez, if any of us were really tricky, we would have a copy of this LA Slimes article on a table outside a tofu health food store.
Then, we would pass out a whole lot of these:

You are so right. If Davis was a Republican, he would have been chased from office like Quackenbush.
And what Quack did is NOTHING compared to Gray Davis!

If I did this for a living, I would not have so much fun.
I will be posting these stickers on our garbage toters that go out and across the street each Wednesday for garbage pickup.
We have a couple of elite Club Sierrians and total loyalists to Davis who live up the hill on the street we live in. They will probably stroke out and wreck their Lincolns, Beamers and Mercs. Their internal struggle will be like splitting the atom.
My wife said that if I did this, I had to put the toters down hill from our house so our car port is not taken out after they see these stickers and stroke out.

Davis aides and legislators who represent logging areas say the tax would have hurt already struggling companies. They conveniently forgot to mention that raising taxes for the rest of us (income taxes, sales taxes, vehicle licence and registration fees, etc.) will also hurt struggling families.

That's odd,. It's working for me. I've noticed that the LA Times along with some other papers is now requiring you to re-login if you're referred from another site like FreeRepublic. You can right-click, copy the shortcut, then paste it into the browser's URL window to bypass that requirement. That's assuming that you've already logged in to the LA Times site some time in the past, and it remembers that.

UH OH they are trying to collect statistics as to how many come from here, maybe!

I think I confused things.
The link on the article thread may work fine, but you had posted this on the State Board:
Speaking of taxes, here's a story on how Davis blocked higher taxes for a group of timber companies that gave him a big donation.
It shows up on some of the search screens and that was the link that didn't work!

It turns out that the state board postings don't take html, unfortunately, so the link got messed up.
