Politics: GOP candidate gets a hearing on coastal drilling cutbacks. The White House also steps into his campaign to oust a top strategist.

WASHINGTON -- Moving on two fronts to bolster California's Republican candidate for governor, the Bush administration on Wednesday gave Bill Simon Jr. a national stage to assert leadership on the issue of offshore oil drilling even as it forced the ouster of a top Simon campaign aide.

Now I can't even see today's LATimes news online without registering. How inconvenient!

Anyway, the article also says that Bush is influencing Simon's campaign staff:
Ron Rogers, the strategist in charge of the campaign's day-to-day operations, was ousted in favor of John Peschong, a veteran California Republican Party operative and close ally of Gerald Parsky

Given a 4/28/02 article in the Contra Costa Times, Fund-raisers featuring Bush giving Simon chance to shine, it seems Rogers lasted only two months:
Ron Rogers, a 34-year veteran of California politics, will take over as Simon's campaign manager. He is a partner in Russo's consulting firm and managed Matt Fong's U.S. Senate race in 1998.

Did Peschong support any candidate before the primary? I hope Simon's political views don't change with pressure from Rove and Parsky.

Well, ya know how the old saying goes... If at first you don't succeed, capitulate!!!

Anything for victory, even if it's meaningless upon acheivement. Play the Demonicrats game of "We're gonna fool ya, so we can rule ya!" Never be a statesman loser when you can be a political winner! Pragmatism is the only answer to life's mysteries!!! (scowl)

This is a really stupid move. If money won elections in California we would have Ed Zschau and Michael Huffington as Senators. Look at what happened to their favorite RINO, Tom Campbell. They may pull it out with this strategy only because Davis is so hated, but it doesn't say squat for the long-term efficacy of their plans. Votes win elections and without an enthusiastic base and a way to win swing constituencies without stupid pandering they may well blow this thing. As it is these Roving suckups are doing their level best to tell the rural voter that their turnout doesn't count. Bill Jones proved that it does.

They continue to fail at delivering what the people really want.... A True Republican Government, Respectful of all Peoples but Beholden to None
