SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 30, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Another aide to Gov. Gray Davis has resigned amid a controversy surrounding a multimillion-dollar state computer contract.
Vince Patel resigned Wednesday as the governor's interim director of e-government. The announcement came less than a month after Patel replaced Arun Baheti, who was fired after accepting a $25,000 campaign donation for Davis while negotiating a deal with Oracle Corp.
Several state investigations are under way into alleged conflicts of interest involving the state's technology contracts.
In Patel's case, his brother was a technical engineer for BroadVision, which received a $772,000 contract to work on the state's Web page.
Patel said in Thursday's San Jose Mercury News that he did nothing wrong but offered to step aside for the governor. "If there's some negative perception, then I don't want to add to it," he said.
Davis spokesman Steve Maviglio said Patel's duties would be taken over on an interim basis by the Department of Information Technology, which also has a new interim director.
The controversy started last year when the state signed a no-bid, $95 million contract with Oracle, the software giant based in Redwood City.
The contract was advertised as saving at least $16 million - and potentially up to $111 million - through volume purchases and maintenance of software. But the state auditor concluded it could end up costing California up to $41 million more than previous software supply arrangements would have.
Two Davis aides have left their jobs and a third was put on paid leave since the audit was released earlier this year.
The state Assembly also weighed in Wednesday, approving and sending to the Senate a bill that would require a needs assessment, independent evaluation and competitive bid process for information technology contracts.
"Obviously, we need to make sure we don't repeat the mistakes we made with the Oracle contract," Assemblyman Manny Diaz said.

Why can't the Kali AG and the mediots in Kali connect these simple dots?
