The original bill AB1058:

Two cents .02 per mile driven, if you drive 20,000 miles per year this will cost you $400 per year.

Fifty cents per gallon increase in gas tax. this will cost you $500 per year.

$3500 surcharge on SUVs, light trucks. and sports cars.

Reduce the speed limit to 55mph, priceless on you nerves when you have to drive 75/80 miles per day to work.

I dont know where these politicos live but they are completely out of touch with the average woarker in Ca.. If you are young and can only afford a home in the Inland Empire or the Valencia/Newhall are you are screwed. The above cost will double or maybe more.

If he signs it the Republicans can use it against him--had they the wit to do so (which they seem not to). This will hit people hard--especially the "working poor".

The Dems are counting on short memories, not remembering who brought the pain--but the pain will be present, and all Simon would have to do is remind people of how this all came about.

The odds: 5-to-1 the Republicans won't even mention it in campaign ads.
