Gov. Gray Davis' proposed budget cuts hit many government agencies hard, but one of the biggest blows was suffered by the California Postsecondary Education Commission, which faces virtual elimination.
The commission, which collects higher education data for the state and advises the Legislature and governor's administration on higher education policy, will be left with only three of its 46 positions under Davis' proposal.

Gee, I wonder if governors like Grey Davis are making sudden cuts in funding for basic services in order to preserve pet projects like Head Start and whatnot. How often does that happen during recessions, do ya think? I wonder if he's still angling for a cabinet position or the presidency.
